Here’s a detailed overview of the new features and enhancements in version 11.
Agentless Backup for Proxmox VE
Organizations that rely on Proxmox VE can now protect their virtual environments more efficiently and with less overhead. You can back up Proxmox VMs directly at the host level without having to install agents on each VM. Backups are incremental at the block level, leveraging native change-tracking technology to copy only modified data blocks.
You can also send backups to local, cloud and S3-compatible storage, deduplication appliances, CIFS and NFS shares or Tape. In addition, you can create and send backup copies to an offsite location to properly implement the 3-2-1 or the 3-2-1-1 backup strategies and ensure data availability in any scenario.
For recovery, you can choose to restore entire Proxmox VMs with all their data or instantly recover individual files and application objects to their original or a different location. You can enable immutability for backups in local and cloud repositories or create air-gapped backups on tape to protect data from modification or deletion by ransomware. Additionally, enable backup encryption to prevent data breaches throughout the lifecycle of your backups.
Backup to Cloud for Microsoft 365
This release marks a milestone for NAKIVO Backup for Microsoft 365, adding new storage destinations, ransomware-proof backup support and automated backup tiering.
Starting from v11, you can send backups of Microsoft 365 data not only to local folders but also to the following storage targets:
- Cloud platforms (Amazon S3, Wasabi, Azure Blob, Backblaze B2)
- S3-compatible storage platforms
- NFS and SMB shares
- Deduplication appliances
Moreover, with v11, you can create additional backup copies of Microsoft 365 data and store them in different storage locations. Using the job chaining feature, you can automatically transfer backup copies to the storage destinations mentioned above, in addition to tape media.
This flexibility also allows for easy migration of backups between different storage destinations, ensuring optimal storage utilization and data resilience.
You can also enable immutability for Microsoft 365 backups stored in local and cloud storage to protect against ransomware, deletions or unwanted modifications.
With these new capabilities, you can now implement the 3-2-1-1 backup strategy to reap the benefits of hybrid storage, protect against cyber threats and ensure data availability in any scenario.
NAS Backup
NAKIVO NAS Backup allows you to back up the contents of SMB and NFS file shares hosted on NAS devices, Windows machines and Linux machines. Starting from v11, you can send backups of your file shares to a diverse range of storage targets, including:
- Cloud platforms (Amazon S3, Wasabi, Azure Blob, Backblaze B2)
- S3-compatible storage platforms
- Local folders
- Other NFS and SMB shares
- Deduplication appliances
The v11 release extends the backup copy and job chaining support to NAS Backup, allowing you to create and automatically move backup copies between different storage locations, including tape. Immutability can be enabled in local or cloud-based repositories to protect backups from ransomware attacks and unauthorized deletions.
With these changes, you can boost the resilience of your file share backups and ensure operational continuity at all times.
Source-Side Backup Encryption
With data breaches on the rise, organizations are under more pressure to implement robust encryption mechanisms to protect sensitive data.
With v11, you can encrypt backups at the source, in transit and at rest in the repository to improve security and compliance standards. The new functionality allows you to encrypt backups at the source side before they are transferred and stored, requiring a password to decrypt the data. Moreover, the feature supports AWS KMS integration to protect against key loss in case you lose the decryption keys.
You can also encrypt self-backups that contain the solution’s system configurations. Encrypted backups can be stored in local folders, public cloud platforms, S3-compatible storage, SMB/NFS network shares, tape, and deduplication appliances.
Note: We highly recommend combining Backup Encryption with immutable storage to create a more powerful barrier against security risks and cyber threats.
Backup from NetApp Storage Snapshots
The latest release adds support for NetApp FAS and NetApp AFF storage arrays to the Backup from Storage Snapshots feature. This existing functionality allows you to create VM backups from storage snapshots instead of regular VM snapshots for VMware vSphere VMs hosted on supported storage devices, which already include HPE 3PAR, Nimble Storage, Primera and Alletra.
Using storage snapshots to perform backups reduces the impact on performance in your production environment, making VM backup operations lighter on resources.
Federated Repository
In large environments with extensive datasets, having storage that can expand and adjust to changing needs is often a fundamental requirement.
In v11, we’re introducing the Federated Repository – an easily scalable backup repository. The Federated Repository acts like an expandable storage pool composed of multiple standalone repositories, called “members”. You can expand a Federated Repository quickly and easily by adding new members to hold more data without any complex configurations.
Even if a member repository fails or runs out of space, backup operations continue uninterrupted as long as another usable member is available. Similarly, if a member becomes full or inaccessible, you can recover data from recovery points on other accessible members. You can also migrate backups across available members to free up space or lock a member to stop data writing.
The Federated Repository enables seamless expansion of storage capacity and improves resource utilization across distributed environments. By extension, this type of repository improves backup reliability, as scalable and resilient storage creates a more consistent data protection framework.
Tenant Overview Dashboard
The MSP Console in NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers a centralized view of all tenant environments and data protection activities, allowing MSPs to monitor and manage multiple tenants from a single interface.
In v11, we are introducing a Tenant Overview Dashboard to the MSP Console. This dashboard provides a convenient overview of all managed tenants in a single location. The new dashboard offers real-time insights into client data protection infrastructures, such as node status, available resources, scheduled activities and inventory information. MSPs can effortlessly sort, filter and search through tenant lists to locate the necessary information, identify and resolve pending issues and perform bulk actions.
The Tenant Overview Dashboard greatly enhances visibility in multi-tenant environments, allowing MSPs to save time on routine tasks, quickly resolve issues and optimize resource and license allocation.
Additional Enhancements
Immutable Storage on NEC HYDRAstor
NAKIVO Backup & Replication supports NEC HYDRAstor as a storage destination among other deduplication appliances.
In v11, we’re adding support for the WORM (write-once, read-many) data storage technology in NEC HYDRAstore to make backup immutable. You can now store backups in an immutable format on NEC HYDRAstor to protect against ransomware attacks, accidental or intentional deletions and other unwanted modifications.
Real-Time ReplicationBETA for VMware: vSphere 8.0 Support
In 2023, we introduced Real-Time ReplicationBETA for VMware, a powerful disaster recovery tool that enables you to create real-time replicas of VMware vSphere VMs and achieve RPOs as low as 1 second. In v11, we’re expanding the scope of this functionality to cover VMware vSphere 8.0. Maintain uninterrupted workflows for critical VMs as you upgrade your VMware vSphere environment.
