What is the difference between subscription and perpetual licenses?
With a subscription license:
- You can use the NAKIVO solution for the number of years you pay for.
- You get free 24/7 technical support.
- You have a very flexible pricing model because the licensing unit is a workload.
- Throughout the subscription period, you can easily reassign licensed units between different types of workloads as your IT infrastructure changes.
With the perpetual license:
- You pay only once and can use the NAKIVO solution for an indefinite period of time.
- Perpetual licenses come with standard support during business hours, Monday through Friday.
- Perpetual licenses are less flexible than subscription licenses because you pay for a specific workload type. For example, with a perpetual license for virtual machines, you won’t be able to back up physical servers.
Can I combine perpetual and subscription licenses?
You can’t combine perpetual and per-workload subscription licenses in one NAKIVO Backup & Replication deployment.
However, subscription licenses for Microsoft 365 Backup can be combined with any license type, including perpetual licenses for other types of IT infrastructures.
Do you offer discounts for educational institutions?
Yes! We offer discounts to educational institutions with academic perpetual licenses. The price starts at $195 ($229) per socket for virtual machines. Learn more about the benefits of NAKIVO’s solution for educational institutions or contact our sales team for more details.
How do I renew my license?
If you have an expired license, want to upgrade to a more advanced solution edition or need to protect a new infrastructure, reach out to our managers for a personalized quote.
What is a workload?
Subscription licenses are purchased on a per-workload basis. A workload is equivalent to one of the following:
- 1 VMware VM
- 1 Hyper-V VM
- 1 Nutanix AHV VM
- 1 Proxmox VM
- 1 AWS EC2 instance
- 1 physical server
- 3 physical workstations
- 500 GB of source file share data
- 1 Oracle database (Enterprise Plus only)
For example, you need to protect 3 VMs, 1 physical server and 500 GB of source file share data. You pay a subscription for 5 workloads. You can substitute supported workloads freely for the same number of units during the subscription period.
Note that licenses are required only for those workloads that you want to back up. So you don’t need a license for target servers or servers to which data is recovered.
If you purchase a subscription license for Microsoft 365, then a workload is equivalent to 1 user in your organization’s Microsoft 365 account.
How long is technical support valid with a perpetual license?
A perpetual license includes 1 year of standard support and free solution updates. After 1 year expires, you stop receiving free updates and technical assistance. However, you can purchase additional years of support whenever you need. Use our Pricing Calculator to estimate the cost of additional years of technical support. Or contact our sales team.
